Things To Practice!

Kindergarten is a very busy year.  Now that we know our letters and sounds, we are ready to begin reading.  Please review our sight words each night.  Many of the sentences we read are made up of mostly sight words.  Remember that by the end of the year they will have 40 sight words to know!

Here is a list of decodable words that you can have your child practice reading at home.  These are words they should sound out.  Please contact me if you have any questions!

Please also continue to save the paper readers that come home each Friday.  These little books are a great way to practice reading at home!

Postcards!

Kindergarten’s Got Mail

The 100th Day of School is quickly approaching.  This year Kindergarten is trying to collect 100 postcards by the 100th Day of School in February.  We need your help to achieve our goal.
We are asking all parents to mail a post card to our school.  If you are traveling it would be fun to receive a postcard from you, but you could also send a post card from your home.  Please pass this on to any family members or friends (especially those who live in other states or countries) to help us reach our goal.
Our students will love receiving postcards from you, and this will be a great way to learn about other places!  We look forward to hearing from you!

Here is the address:

Kindergarten Updates!

It was so nice seeing many of you at Parent Visitation this week.  I hope you enjoyed the time you spent in our classroom!

In Language Arts we are continuing to work on letters, sounds, and sight words.  We are also focusing on beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  For example, if I say "sat" your child should be able to tell me that the sounds in "sat" are /s/ /a/ /t/.  Also, you can say a word and ask them to tell you either the beginning, middle or ending sound of the word.

We are also working on our comprehension skills.  The students are practicing retelling a story.  They are also practicing identifying character, setting, and main idea.  Please read to your child each night.  Soon they will be able to help you read some words!

The students are doing a great job with kid writing.  Currently they are working on writing one complete sentence with the help of a teacher.  The next step is to encourage them to write independently.  When writing with your child at home please remind the to start with a capital letter, leave spaces between their words, and use punctuation at the end of the sentence.  Encourage them to draw a detailed picture that goes along with their sentence.

In Math we will work on numbers 0-5.  We will also continue working on graphing.  Please review the terms more and fewer.  Those terms can get confusing for some.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Kindergarten Reminders!

Kindergarten is in full swing and we are very busy learning lots of new things.  Please review your child's Math worksheet every night.  The worksheet will show you what we are working on in class.  It's important to reinforce the skills we are working on in school.  Next week we will be having our first Math test!

In Language Arts we are practicing letters Aa-Rr.  Please take at least five minutes a night to practice the alphabet flashcards that were sent home at Kindergarten Orientation.  Ask your child to name the letter and the sound.  Also, ask them to share their alphabet chant with you.  Maybe you can sing along with them!  In Language Arts we are also working on identifying characters in a story.  Ask your child to name the characters in the stories that you read to them each night!

Our school nurse has asked that you send in a change of clothing with your child in case of accidents or spills throughout the day.  Please send the clothing in a labeled Ziploc bag and I will store it until the end of the school year.

Please encourage your child to take his/her time with the homework.  All homework should be completed neatly using a pencil.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Another Fun Week!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!  I am excited to be back to school and I hope your child is as well :)

This week we will be working on letters Aa-Hh.  We will practice identifying these letters, saying the sound for each letter, and writing each letter.  Please practice these skills at home with your child each night.  Ask your child to sing our alphabet chant to you.  It's a great way for them to practice their letters and sounds! Please also continue to help your child write his/her first name.  Remember that the first letter should be capital and the rest should be lowercase.  We will also review the first two sight words- I and can. We will be working on rhyming all year long.  This can be a difficult skill for some children so reinforcing the skill at home will be helpful!

In Math we are just finishing up our shape book and color book.  On Wednesday we will begin Chapter 1 which will consist of the following skills- top, middle, bottom, left, right, under, over, above, below, in and out.  We will also work on sorting objects by color, shape and size.  Please review the math worksheet that will come home each night.  The back of the worksheet will have some "At Home" activities to do with your child each night.

A few reminders--
~ Please review the student dress code.  Students must wear shirts with sleeves.
~ Please check your child's folder each night and be sure to sign the behavior book each night!
~ Please take time to sit with your child during homework time.  Homework should be completed neatly!

As always please feel free to contact me with an questions or concerns!

First Day Fun!

We are off to a wonderful start here in Mrs. Sharkazy's class.  Today we spent time learning about HERO behavior in the classroom, hallway, bathroom, lunchroom, and playground.  We also read lots of stories, colored pictures, talked about colors and shapes, and played outside.  We met Mr. Serensits, our principal, at our first assembly this afternoon as well.

Please remember to look through your child's folder each night.  We have lots of papers that will come home the first week!  As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Have a great night!
