Welcome Mr. Sparkles!

On Monday one of Santa's elves arrived in our classroom.  Since our elf did not have a name we had a writing contest to help us come up with the perfect name for him.  Mrs. Ginther helped us with our contest and she picked the name "Mr. Sparkles".  To hear the other names the class chose please listen to our latest podcast "Welcome Mr. Sparkles".

Welcome December!

It's hard to believe that winter break is just around the corner.  In kindergarten we have a lot of fun and exciting activities planned.  Last week we sponge painted Santa decorations that are now hanging in our hallway.  Tomorrow we will be making reindeer for the hallway in preparation for Santa's visit later in the month!

This month in Science we will begin Unit 2 which is all about the five Senses.  In this Unit we will be doing several experiments where the students will have to use one of their five senses.  When the Science activity sheets come home please ask your child to talk about what he/she is learning in school.

In Language Arts we will continue working on setting, character, main idea, compare and contrast, realism and fantasy, and sequence. We will also continue to review all letters and sounds. Please continue to practice all of the Unit 1 and 2 sight words. Once your child knows all of the words please return them in a labeled bag or envelope so we can test your child in school. We will continue to work on decoding new words. Here is a list of some words you can practice at home (tip, sip, pat, cat, rug, map, tin, man, can, tub, bit, bam, nap, mom, Tom, Bim, Pam, cabs, Nan, bats, ram, ribs, rim). Please also remember to have your child read the little booklets that are sent home each week.

Many students are writing independently now! Some are even writing 2 or 3 sentences in their journals. Please encourage your child to write at home. Remind them to make the first letter capital and the rest lowercase. They should be leaving spacemen between words and they should be using correct punctuation at the end of the sentence.

In Math we are starting Chapter 5.  We will learn about shapes and solid figures.  Remember to check out the back of the math worksheets for "At Home Activities" to work on with your child at home.  Please review patterns, spatial relationships, numbers 0-10, before and after on the number line, and graphing (including the terms more and fewer).  These are all skills your child will be expected to know for the next report card.

Just a few reminders--

1. We will be attending the Book Fair Tuesday morning, December 4th. If you want to send money in with your child please send it in an envelope or bag marked with your child's name and "Book Fair Money" on it.

2. Santa gifts are due by December 12th. Please send it to the office with your child's name and teachers name on it. Gifts should cost no more than $10. Santa will deliver the gifts on December 20th during our party!  If you would like to join us for the party please contact me so I can let you know the time our party will begin.

3. We will be attending the holiday band concert on Tuesday, December 11th during the school day.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Busy Learners!

Kindergarten is now in full swing! We have been busy learning a lot of new things this week.

In Language Arts, we talked about characters in a story. At home when reading with your child each night ask them to identify the characters in the story. We talked extensively about the sight words "I" and "am". Please continue practicing the orange sight word cards with your child. Once they know all the words return them to school paper clipped together or in a baggie labeled with your child's name. We have been practicing writing capital and lowercase letters A-F. We have also practiced identifying those letters and the sounds they make. Review these letters and sounds at home each night. We will work on letters G-K next week! Continue to help your child write his/her first name. Remember the first letter is capital and the rest are lowercase. We started working on rhyming this week and we will review that next week as well.

In Math, we are working on the following skills- top, middle, bottom, above, below, over, under, in, out, left and right. Remember to take a look at your child's math worksheet each night. On the back you will find at-home activities that you can do with your child. We are also learning about the words- first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Please review these terms on a regular basis! Our first Math test will be on Thursday!

Other reminders-
~Please send a snack with your child each day (drinks are optional, but suggested)
~ I could use donations of tissues and clorox wipes
~ Please help your child learn his/her pin number
~ Please review the George Wolf "HERO" rules and expectations. They can be found in your child's orange behavior book inside their yellow folder
