Things To Practice!

Kindergarten is a very busy year.  Now that we know our letters and sounds, we are ready to begin reading.  Please review our sight words each night.  Many of the sentences we read are made up of mostly sight words.  Remember that by the end of the year they will have 40 sight words to know!

Here is a list of decodable words that you can have your child practice reading at home.  These are words they should sound out.  Please contact me if you have any questions!

Please also continue to save the paper readers that come home each Friday.  These little books are a great way to practice reading at home!

Postcards!

Kindergarten’s Got Mail

The 100th Day of School is quickly approaching.  This year Kindergarten is trying to collect 100 postcards by the 100th Day of School in February.  We need your help to achieve our goal.
We are asking all parents to mail a post card to our school.  If you are traveling it would be fun to receive a postcard from you, but you could also send a post card from your home.  Please pass this on to any family members or friends (especially those who live in other states or countries) to help us reach our goal.
Our students will love receiving postcards from you, and this will be a great way to learn about other places!  We look forward to hearing from you!

Kindergarten Updates!

It was so nice seeing many of you at Parent Visitation this week.  I hope you enjoyed the time you spent in our classroom!

In Language Arts we are continuing to work on letters, sounds, and sight words.  We are also focusing on beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  For example, if I say "sat" your child should be able to tell me that the sounds in "sat" are /s/ /a/ /t/.  Also, you can say a word and ask them to tell you either the beginning, middle or ending sound of the word.

We are also working on our comprehension skills.  The students are practicing retelling a story.  They are also practicing identifying character, setting, and main idea.  Please read to your child each night.  Soon they will be able to help you read some words!

The students are doing a great job with kid writing.  Currently they are working on writing one complete sentence with the help of a teacher.  The next step is to encourage them to write independently.  When writing with your child at home please remind the to start with a capital letter, leave spaces between their words, and use punctuation at the end of the sentence.  Encourage them to draw a detailed picture that goes along with their sentence.

In Math we will work on numbers 0-5.  We will also continue working on graphing.  Please review the terms more and fewer.  Those terms can get confusing for some.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
