Kindergarten Update!

In Language Arts we are working on retelling a story.  When reading to your child ask him/her to tell you the characters, setting, and main idea.  Also have your child retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  While reading the story you can ask questions like- "Why do you think the character did that?" or "What would you have done if you were that character?" or "What do you think will happen next and why?".

We are also working on reading new words.  Please encourage your child to sound out new words when they read to you at home.  Here is a list of words you can have your child read at home- Tam, Sam, Tim, Rin, rat, sat, cat, and, can, sit, bit, in, tin, pin.  Please also continue to practice the Unit 1, 2 and 3 sight words.  When you child knows all of the Unit 3 sight words please send the words in for your child to be tested.

Please encourage your child to write sentences at home.  You could even give them a little journal to write in.  Remind them to begin their sentence with a capital letter, leave spaces between words, and use punctuation.  Your child should write at least one complete sentence independently, but encourage them to write more than one sentence if they can! After the holiday break we will begin working on our class book!  Our Book Presentation will be held in the Spring!

In Math we just finished learning about numbers 0-30.  Please continue to practice these numbers with your child.  I will be sending the test home on Tuesday for you to review.  I recommend that you practice any problems that your child got wrong.  We will continue to review these skills in school as well.  By the 4th marking period your child will be expected to count to 100 and recognize numbers 0-100.  Our next chapter in math will include solid figures- cube, cone, cylinder, sphere.

In Science we just finished learning about the Five Senses.  Ask your child to share what he/she learned about the senses.  Our next Science Unit will be on Earth and Space!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me!

Have a great week!

Kindergarten Shirts!

We would like to thank Mr. Bindics for helping us make our kindergarten shirts this week!  They look amazing!  If you ordered a shirt for your child they will be coming home on Monday.

This week we were working on graphing and numbers 1-4.  Next week we will continue working on numbers.  Please have your child practice writing numbers 0-9 at home!

In language arts we are continuing to practice naming all of the letters and sounds.  We have also started reading words.  Please have your child sound out and read the following words- Tam, Sam, mat, tap, sat, map, tap, at.  Also, please be sure to have your child read the little decodable readers that come home each Friday.  It is good to save the readers throughout the year to have your child practice reading them each night.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Also, if you would like to learn more ways to help your child at home I would be happy to give you some more ideas!

Have a good weekend!

Graphing!

In Math, Chapter 3 will cover numbers 0-5 and graphing.  We also are working on the terms "more" and "fewer". Today we practiced graphing the number of girls and boys in the classroom.  We also graphed our favorite snack--cookies or ice cream.

In Language Arts we are continuing to read lots of fun, new stories.  We are practicing identifying character, setting, and sequence in the stories.  Please set aside some time to read to your child each night.  You can help your child become a successful reader by reading to them!  Please consider visiting the Northampton Public Library.  They have many fun, free activities available for children and families!

We are also working on writing complete sentences.  When writing with your child each night please remind them to start writing on the left side of the page.  Also remind them that the first letter is capital and the rest are lowercase.  Encourage them to leave spaces between each word and a period at the end of the sentence!

Please continue to review the letters and sounds each night.  The quicker they can name the letters and sounds the easier it will be for them to start reading words and sentences.  We just finished Unit 1 today so your child will be receiving the Unit 2 sight words next week.  Please start to work on these words, but also continue to review the words from Unit 1.
