Community Helpers!

This week we started a Project-Based Learning Unit on Community Helpers.  On Monday I asked each student to name as many Community Helpers as they could.  Many of the students named jobs like- police officer and fire fighter.  To my surprise only one student named a teacher!

On Tuesday, we worked with Mrs. Quinones' class to create a huge list of Community Helpers.

One Wednesday, we read a story called "Career Day".  They story highlighted many careers that students were familiar with.

Yesterday we learned about being a dentist.  We visited Mrs. Arcury's office to see some of the tools that a dentist uses.

Today we learned about a pediatrician.  The students learned about the tools a pediatrician uses.  They also had a chance to role play and pretend they were a real pediatrician.

Please ask your child about what they learn each day.  Next week they will learn about firefighters, chefs, veterinarians and architects.

Later in the month we will have parents visit our classroom to teach about their jobs.  Students will also complete a writing assignment about what they want to be when they grow up.

Our Unit will conclude on October 28th with the Vocabulary Parade. For the parade, students will dress up according to what they want to be when they grow up!  Their costume should include a sign stating the career they have chosen.

Our First Podcast!

We hope you enjoy our first podcast- ABC Chant!  We have been working very hard each day.  I am proud of the progress we have made so far and I look forward to all of the exciting learning opportunities ahead.

Here are some things you can work on at home:

rhyming
syllables
letter identification
sound identification
writing capital and lowercase letters
writing first and last name
sight words
listening comprehension- name the character, setting, main idea

In Math we are reviewing numbers 0-5 and we are talking about- equal groups, more than, less than.  Please review the math worksheets that come home each day.  These are a great studying tool for your child before each test.

Next week we will have our Topic 2 test.  After that, we will be learning numbers 6-10.

In October, we will begin our Project Based Learning Unit on Community Helpers.  More information will be coming home in the upcoming week.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns!

Math Centers

Here are some pictures from our math centers this week.  The students are doing a great job working at their centers.  The centers are encouraging teamwork and helping them to learn how to work independently. This week in math we are continuing to work on numbers 0-5.  Students should be able to count to 5, write numbers 0-5, and recognize numbers 0-5.  The math centers that we are working on this week are reinforcing all of these skills.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

First Week Fun!

We are off to a wonderful start!  I am enjoying getting to know your child.  I can tell that we will have a fantastic year together.  Please remember to email or call if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.

We are working on reviewing colors and shapes.  We are also learning about HERO behavior and talking about ways we can be a HERO at George Wolf.  Today we learned about the letter Aa.  We learned how to correctly make capital and lowercase Aa and we learned the alphabet chant for A.  Tomorrow we will work on letter Bb and Friday we will work on letter Cc.  We are also working very hard at writing our first name correctly.  Remember that your child's first letter should be capital and the rest of the letters should be lowercase.  Please encourage your child to practice each day.

We started kid writing today.  We learned about the words (am, I).  We also learned about the spaceman and we learned about punctuation.  Please discuss these skills with your child at home.  Feel free to create a writing journal for them at home, too!

Enjoy the pictures!
