I hope everyone is having a great 2014! So far the students are off to a great start despite the craziness of delays and snow days! I'm about ready for spring :)
In Language Arts we will continue to work on character, setting and main idea. We will also practice retelling a story using beginning, middle, and end. Please try to read to your child each night. Continue to practice the sight words from Units 1, 2, 3, and 4. Your child should be able to say the words quickly. This will help the to become fluent readers! Please also review letters and sounds and encourage your child to name the letters and sounds quickly. The following words are decodable words that you can have your child practice reading- hip, hop, hot, had, spot, top, pan, Sam, him, lip, lap, lob, doll, hill, cat, cap, pit, net, pig, jam. Just a reminder to also have your child practice reading the little booklets that come home each week!
In Math we will continue to practice counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. This is an easy skill that you can practice anywhere and anytime! You can have your child count while they are in the car, while you are cooking dinner, or when they are getting ready for bed. Please also practice identifying numbers 0-100 and counting to 100.
In Writing we started to work on our class book. This year the book will be all about animals in the forest. This is a very exciting project for your child so please talk with them about it at home! Next week I will be sending home the order form in case you would like to purchase a book.
Reminders-
Return the 25 book challenge paper by March. If you misplaced the paper please let me know and I will send you a new one!
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Postcard Project!
So far we have received 48 postcards. Our goal is to receive 100 postcards by the 100th day of school. We are about 23 school days away from the 100th day of school. Please help us reach our goal! The students love receiving postcards from family and friends :)

Kindergarten Update!
In Language Arts we are working on retelling a story. When reading to your child ask him/her to tell you the characters, setting, and main idea. Also have your child retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story. While reading the story you can ask questions like- "Why do you think the character did that?" or "What would you have done if you were that character?" or "What do you think will happen next and why?".
We are also working on reading new words. Please encourage your child to sound out new words when they read to you at home. Here is a list of words you can have your child read at home- Tam, Sam, Tim, Rin, rat, sat, cat, and, can, sit, bit, in, tin, pin. Please also continue to practice the Unit 1, 2 and 3 sight words. When you child knows all of the Unit 3 sight words please send the words in for your child to be tested.
Please encourage your child to write sentences at home. You could even give them a little journal to write in. Remind them to begin their sentence with a capital letter, leave spaces between words, and use punctuation. Your child should write at least one complete sentence independently, but encourage them to write more than one sentence if they can! After the holiday break we will begin working on our class book! Our Book Presentation will be held in the Spring!
In Math we just finished learning about numbers 0-30. Please continue to practice these numbers with your child. I will be sending the test home on Tuesday for you to review. I recommend that you practice any problems that your child got wrong. We will continue to review these skills in school as well. By the 4th marking period your child will be expected to count to 100 and recognize numbers 0-100. Our next chapter in math will include solid figures- cube, cone, cylinder, sphere.
In Science we just finished learning about the Five Senses. Ask your child to share what he/she learned about the senses. Our next Science Unit will be on Earth and Space!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me!
Have a great week!
