Kindergarten Update!

In Language Arts we are working on retelling a story.  When reading to your child ask him/her to tell you the characters, setting, and main idea.  Also have your child retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  While reading the story you can ask questions like- "Why do you think the character did that?" or "What would you have done if you were that character?" or "What do you think will happen next and why?".

We are also working on reading new words.  Please encourage your child to sound out new words when they read to you at home.  Here is a list of words you can have your child read at home- Tam, Sam, Tim, Rin, rat, sat, cat, and, can, sit, bit, in, tin, pin.  Please also continue to practice the Unit 1, 2 and 3 sight words.  When you child knows all of the Unit 3 sight words please send the words in for your child to be tested.

Please encourage your child to write sentences at home.  You could even give them a little journal to write in.  Remind them to begin their sentence with a capital letter, leave spaces between words, and use punctuation.  Your child should write at least one complete sentence independently, but encourage them to write more than one sentence if they can! After the holiday break we will begin working on our class book!  Our Book Presentation will be held in the Spring!

In Math we just finished learning about numbers 0-30.  Please continue to practice these numbers with your child.  I will be sending the test home on Tuesday for you to review.  I recommend that you practice any problems that your child got wrong.  We will continue to review these skills in school as well.  By the 4th marking period your child will be expected to count to 100 and recognize numbers 0-100.  Our next chapter in math will include solid figures- cube, cone, cylinder, sphere.

In Science we just finished learning about the Five Senses.  Ask your child to share what he/she learned about the senses.  Our next Science Unit will be on Earth and Space!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me!

Have a great week!

iPad Fun!

This week in Math we continued working on numbers 0-10.  Please practice writing these numbers at home.  Please also review counting up to 10 objects and counting orally to 100. Yesterday we practiced writing numbers 0-9 on the iPads!

In Language Arts we talked about realism and fantasy when we read Bear Snores On.  We also reviewed the sight words - we, my, like.  Please continue to practice all of the Unit 1 and Unit 2 sight words.  Please also review the letters names and sounds.  Here are some words you can have your child practice decoding at home- cat, cap, cast, caps, map, Cam, Sam, Tam, pat, mom, dad, can, and.  They should also practice reading the words on the orange word wheels that have been coming home.  Those word wheels can be stored in the learning boxes along with the ABC flashcards and sight word flashcards and decodable readers!  When reading to your child each night please ask your child to identify the characters, setting, main idea, and sequence.

This week in Science we finished talking about the body parts.  Next, we will begin learning about the 5 Senses.

Please feel free to send in new crayons, glue sticks, and pencils with your child.  Many of our supplies are running low!

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
