Spring Activities!

This week we will be doing lots of seasonal crafts. Today we made bunnies out of paper plates. In the picture to the left Luke is tracing a bunny ear on pink construction paper. In the pictures below Lucas and Emma are showing off their finished bunnies.

* Reminder- the Egg Hunt and Party has been moved to Thursday, April 1st. Thank you to all the parents who donated eggs!

Today we took the Unit 4 Language Arts test. One area that was a bit difficult was listening comprehension. When reading to your child ask them to identify the main idea, characters and setting. Also ask them to retell the beginning, middle and end of the story. Tomorrow we will begin Unit 5. Please begin practicing the Unit 5 sight words with your child.

Kindergarten Authors!

Throughout the year kindergarten has been working very hard on kid writing. They have improved so much over the last few months and they are very enthusiastic about writing. I announced last week that we would be making a class book and they were extremely excited about the news. The theme for the book will be ocean animals. Each student chose their favorite ocean animal and they were asked to think of two sentences to write about that animal. We began the rough drafts last week and we finalized them on Monday. Today we began writing on the pages that will make up the actual book! Later this week we will be drawing and coloring the pictures for the book. More information will be coming home later this month regarding information about purchasing a copy of the book!

*Madelyn is working on her writing while Mrs. Colarusso assists her.

A Rainy Day Project!

Today we started getting ready for St. Patrick's Day. Each student made a pot of gold using corn pops for the gold. Their favorite part of the project was eating the leftover cereal! Tomorrow they will be writing about what they would do if they found a real pot of gold.

Please remember to hand in the 25 Book Challenge reading sheet as soon as your child has finished reading the 25 books. There will be a celebration at the end of the school year for all of the students who participated! Also, we could use some more donations of potting soil. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!

Fifty Nifty United States!

On Friday we recorded a new podcast called "Fifty Nifty United States". Our postcard project inspired us to learn this song. Overall, we collected 144 postcards. We have postcards from 14 different cities in Pennsylvania, 32 different states, and 10 different countries. Enjoy the song!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today we celebrated Dr. Seuss' Birthday with some fun activities. Linda Oatman High, a childrens book author, came to visit George Wolf. She shared lots of inspirational writing stories with the students. She also signed a book for Hope! We also had a Cat in the Hat coloring contest. Congratulations to Ryan and Gavin. They had the nicest work! Everyone also received a Dr. Seuss pencil and sticker! Tomorrow we will get a visit from another author, Kellie Lambert. We will also have a visit from several high school students who will read to the class and do Dr. Seuss related activities with them! You can celebrate Read Across America at home by reading with your child!

Let's Go Shopping!

This week in math we continued to practice money. After introducing the penny, nickel, and dime I set up a school store in our classroom. The students really enjoyed playing school store because they were given play money to buy small items! This is a simple game you can play at home to help your child practice money. Next week will learn about time. We will practice telling time to the hour. Money and time are very exciting skills for a kindergartner to learn, however they can be challenging so please practice with your child when you can!

In Language Arts we are practicing retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story. We also began reading words with beginning and ending blends. Some of those words include- clip, sled, stop, desk, flop, sand, lift, plan, nest and step. Along with practicing blends, please practice all of the sight words we learned this year. I do not want anyone to forget the words we practiced earlier in the year!

The Be a Phanatic About Reading program is coming to an end. Please return your reading sheets (even if they are not completely finished) by Monday, March 1st. I will be mailing the information next week. Hopefully the Philly Phanatic will choose to visit our classroom!

I just want to thank everyone again for helping us meet our postcard goal! We now have a total of 143 postcards! The students enjoyed locating where each postcard came from. They were amazed by how far some of the postcards traveled. I have to admit I was surprised and excited as well!

Valentine Party!

Well, our Valentine's celebration came a little late this year due to the snow. However, we still had a blast yesterday! All of the Valentine boxes were decorated so beautifully. A big thank you to the parents who helped out and all of the parents who donated items for the party. Enjoy the pictures!
